What is hypnosis?

quit smoking

Hypnosis is the creation of a hyper-suggestible state of mind that allows us direct access into the subconscious.  To simplify further, it’s a state of learning.  More importantly, it’s a natural state of learning.

In fact, every single person goes through a state of hypnosis at least twice a day.  Once during the process of falling asleep.  Again during the process of waking up.  It’s impossible to move between sleep and awake states without moving between states of hypnosis.  Most people actually remain in a state of hypnosis through out their day.

It’s important that you understand this concept for smoking cessation.  When using hypnosis to quit smoking, you are learning to be a non-smoker by using the power of your subconscious mind.

How does hypnosis work?

smoking cessation

Hypnosis works by overloading your senses. What does that mean exactly?  Basically, you want to engage your different senses at the same time.

Remember, hypnosis is a state of learning.  Everybody has their own unique learning process.  Thus, one person may simply need to visualize or imagine pictures.  They’ll find they are able to go into a state of hypnosis quickly with this method.  Others may have to burn incense at the same time. Still others can only go into state if they are sitting on a hard chair because of the tactile response.

This is why certain guided meditations or other hypnosis downloads may work great for some people.  For others, that same audio may not be effective.  It’s not that the audio is good or bad.  It simply may or may not be effective for your learning style.

When I am working with people in private sessions, I can test for your learning style.  I can also observe your process of overload.  Then make adjustments on the fly.  This allows me to take you into the appropriate state of hypnosis quickly.  When working with an an audio download, you may have to experiment with different styles.  It may take you a bit to find the style, the voice, and the rhythm that works best for you.

This process of overload is what actually creates the door into the subconscious mind.  This door is our access.  This is how one learns.  When this overload is achieved, your body and mind’s natural response is to go into a state of relaxation.  It’s actually a result of the fight/flight response that is triggered by the overload.

Keep this in mind when you’re listening to the stop smoking hypnosis download at the end of this article.  Do what you can to engage your other senses while listening.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

stop smoking hypnosis

Absolutely, yes.  Again, hypnosis is a natural state of learning.  A hypnotherapist uses that state to teach different habits and behaviors.

Often, you’ll find that inexperienced or less knowledgeable people believe that hypnosis doesn’t work for everyone.  Usually, people come to this judgement after utilizing a free or low-cost hypnosis program.  These free and low-cost downloads are made to work with the largest population possible.

Since everyone’s learning style is unique, effectiveness will vary greatly.  Free downloads are a great way to get introduced to hypnosis.  Hopefully, you are also able to gain something from it.  If not, I wouldn’t blame the creator.  You may not fall in the learning style the audio was created for.

In addition, our subconscious minds are complex.  On the surface, changing a habit or behavior via hypnosis seems simple.  And it can be.  However, if the habit or behavior is attached to complexities, different styles of hypnotherapy may be required.  You can learn more about different types of hypnotherapy on our webpage:  https://hypnotherapy.460sjournal.com/.

Examples might be if a trauma is associated. If there are any mental health concerns. If you would like to explore past life regression.  If a habit is connected to any of these (or some others not listed), you may need to work directly with a hypnotherapist.  Even if you don’t believe any of these apply, but you’re having trouble on your own.  A skilled professional hypnotherapist could help you explore further.  You’d be surprised what connections lie deep in our subconscious.

81% Reported They Had Stopped Smoking After Hypnosis

Thirty smokers enrolled in an HMO were referred by their primary physician for treatment. Twenty-one patients returned after an initial consultation and received hypnosis for smoking cessation. At the end of treatment, 81% of those patients reported that they had stopped smoking, and 48% reported abstinence at 12 months post-treatment.

What does hypnosis feel like?

how to quit smoking

Your experience with hypnosis is uniquely your own.  Some people go into a deep trance state very quickly.  Some take more time.  Some go into state and aren’t aware of feeling any different.  Some people experience physical sensations like warmth, heaviness, or a floating sensation.  Others feel tingly.

Some people see clear images and colors. Some smell aromas.  Some hear music or sounds. Some remember everything.  Some forget, as if waking up from a dream.

In the years that I have been applying this treatment style in my office, I don’t know that I’ve ever had two people express identical experiences.

Hypnosis More Effective Than Drug Interventions For Smoking Cessation

Group hypnosis sessions, evaluated at a less effective success rate (22% success) than individualized hypnosis sessions. However, group hypnosis sessions were still demonstrated here as being more effective than drug interventions.

Is stop smoking hypnosis permanent?

how to stop smoking yourself

Yes, as long as certain conditions are met.

  1. Repetition and reinforcement is critical for long term success.  Everybody’s learning style is different, but the majority of people will need to “learn” the same concept several times before it is deeply seeded.  Though it is possible, few people will quit smoking forever after a single session.  Doesn’t matter if you are listening to a stop smoking hypnosis audio at home or working directly with a hypnotherapist in their smoking cessation program.  If you do apply reinforcement and repetition, your long term success right increases significantly.  Hypnosis becomes the most effective option available.
  2. You are receiving the hypnotherapy in the appropriate learning style.  Basically, using the right techniques.  The right words.  The right tone of voice.  Things of that nature.
  3. You don’t purposely try to re-learn the unwanted behavior.  When it comes down to it, if you don’t actually want to quit for yourself (not because somebody else wants you to), then you’re not going to stop smoking.

Hypnosis Most Effective Says Largest Study Ever: 3 Times as Effective as Patch and 15 Times as Effective as Willpower.

Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. A meta-analysis, statistically combining results of more than 600 studies of 72,000 people from America and Europe to compare various methods of quitting. On average, hypnosis was over three times as effective as nicotine replacement methods and 15 times as effective as trying to quit alone.

How soon will I quit smoking if I use stop smoking hypnosis?

stop smoking

Hypnosis is arguably the most effective smoking cessation treatment available.  Of course, this is dependent upon the right use of technique.

There are many variables that affect the speed at which you are able to stop smoking.  Examples are:

  1. How many cigarettes do you smoke a day?
  2. How long have you been smoking?
  3. What brand do you smoke?
  4. Do you have a support system?

In addition, the type of smoking addiction you have plays a role.  Most people believe smoking to be a physical addiction.  However, the vast majority of people do not actually continue to smoke because of a physical addiction.  This is why medications that treat the physical addiction aspect of smoking aren’t highly effective.

In our office, some people will have had their last cigarette on the very day they see me.  Others will take a few weeks or so to completely stop smoking.  Throughout those weeks, they find themselves smoking less and less.

Hypnosis Patients Twice As Likely To Remain Smoke-Free After Two Years

Study of 71 smokers showed that after a two-year follow up, patients that quit with hypnosis were twice as likely to remain smoke-free than those who quit on their own.

What’s the difference between a stop smoking hypnosis download and a smoking cessation program with a hypnotherapist?

best way to quit smoking

Stop smoking hypnosis downloads are wonderful tools.  Here are some of the pros:

  • Usually more easily accessible
  • Generally affordable
  • May be able to find variety
  • If you have social anxiety, it eliminates the need to communicate with a professional who might be intimidating

Here are some of the cons of relying only on a stop smoking hypnosis download:

  • It’s not individualized to your learning style
  • If complexities are associated, the audio may not be as effective.  For example, if there is a trauma connected.  A deep seated belief can also create a challenge if it isn’t first addressed.
  • You have to rely on your own knowledge and awareness of your inner psychology to make the best choices.

For a smoking cessation program in which you work with a hypnotherapist, here are some pros:

  • The hypnotherapist has the ability to individualize the program for you.
  • The hypnotherapist can determine your learning style.
  • Depending on their training, they can apply psychology to help get to the “real addiction association” as it may not be a physical addiction.  You may actually be dependent on cigarettes because of anxiety or boredom, for example.
  • Adjustments can be made on the fly.
  • For many people, they stop smoking sooner if working with a hypnotherapist.
  • The new behavior is much more likely to be permanent.

Here are the cons:

  • Accessibility.  You may not have a trained hypnotherapist in your area.  If that’s the case, you can do some research online.  We offer sessions via phone and video specifically for those people who can’t physically get to us.
  • Not all hypnotherapists individualize their programs.
  • A large benefit to using hypnotherapy at all to stop smoking is the limitation of withdrawal symptoms.  This is the anger, the anxiety, the cravings.  You have this benefit with the self-hypnosis.  However, a professional can often help even more.  Especially if the withdrawal symptoms are severe.
  • For some people, pricing can be a con.  It usually costs quite a bit more than a hypnosis download.  Actual cost is dependent upon where you live.  Our program runs $600 for the full 3-week smoking cessation program.  Because we want to see you succeed, all of our graduates also get a lifetime of free reinforcement sessions after those 3 weeks are done.  To me, a one time fee of $600 for life time sessions is small.  How long would it take you to spend $600 on cigarettes?
  • Hypnotherapists have different training and skill levels.  It can be overwhelming or even intimidating to have to choose one you can trust.  This is legitimate concern.  All I can say is, don’t be afraid to reach out to any hypnotherapist you are considering working with.  To stop smoking, it will be worth it.
